  • NJM Loves: Oaxaca

With a rich architectural heritage, colourful buildings and murals, and a sophisticated food scene, Oaxaca is a charming place to visit and get a taste for what makes Mexico special. It is compact and well organised, and you can easily get a good sense of the city in three days. On a recent visit, I enjoyed all the things I like to do when I travel – I ate well, saw beautiful design, and spent time with good friends.

  • Oaxaca is renowned for the local craft heritage, specifically in textile and pottery, especially their black ceramic, barro negro, of which I have long been a fan.  I visited San Bartolo Coyotepec, a village outside Oaxaca known for the barro negro. We visited a number of different shops, each with a distinct interpretation of the craft, and I bought some beautiful vases for my projects as well as more tableware for my collection.
